Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG (stylized as airberlin or airberlin.com) was Germany's second largest airline, after Lufthansa, and Europe's eighth largest airline in terms of passengers carried. The airline's network includes a total of 17 German cities, some European metropolitan and several leisure destinations in the Mediterranean region, Madeira, the Canary Islands and North Africa, as well as intercontinental destinations in the Caribbean and the Americas. Its hubs are Berlin-Tegel Airport and Düsseldorf Airport. Originally founded in 1978 as Air Berlin USA, the company saw its ownership swap from US to German company and re-branded Air Berlin after German reunification in 1990. It joined the Oneworld alliance in 2012. After years of losses, Air Berlin filed for insolvency on 15 August 2017 and ceased operations on 27 October 2017.
