BuNo 17171, c/n 12554/43309. A popular tourist spot in Iceland, the crash occurred in 1973. Same aircraft at IMPDb: Frequently Seen Aircraft (Military Fixed-Wing).
Originally built as a C-47A-10-DK with c/n 12554 and serial 42-92722 for the USAAF, later transferred to the US Navy and redesignated an R4D-5. Converted to an R4D-8 in 1951 and given a new construction number (43309). Redesignated a C-117D in 1962.
