Douglas F5D Skylancer on display at the Armstrong Air and Space Museum.

Only four prototypes of the Douglas F5D Skylancer were built of what should be the all-weather version of the Douglas F4D Skyray. First known as F4D-2N, the new design was tested but not ordered as the Vought F-8 Crusader was already on the production line with the same performance. The first flight was made on 21 April 1956 and after the Navy's order was canceled, the four prortoypes flew for various test programs. Two of them were grounded in 1961 while the the others continued to fly with the NASA until their retirment in 1970. These two airframes are the only one surviving in museum.
