The maiden flight occured on 20 March 1942 and first aircraft reach units at the end of the year. But several troubles with the overheating engine led and the lack of an effective turbocharger ampered its goal. Its real combat debut dated from mid 1944 but the high altitudes of US strategic bombing raids and the switch to night missions limited its effectiveness.<br>
