The Mitsubishi J2M was a single-engined land-based fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service in World War II. The maiden flight occured on 20 March 1942 and first aircraft reach units at the end of the year. But several troubles with the overheating engine and the lack of an effective turbocharger cut its qualities. Its real combat debut dated from mid 1944 but the high altitudes of US strategic bombing raids and the switch to night missions by the USAAF have limited its effectiveness. Raiden is the Japanese word for Thunderbolt.
