Late during the Soviet-Afghan war in 1981, a group of Russian tanks massacre an Afghan village. Taj, the son of the village's khan, swears vengeance against the Russians and pursues them along with the other surviving villagers. While retreating, one, commanded by the ruthless Daskal, becomes separated from the column. Daskal ruthlessly pushes his men to their limits. The tank's driver, Koverchenko, already feeling remorse for the destruction of the village, defies Daskal after his commander murders their Afghan interpreter, and ends up assisting Taj in his quest for vengeance against his fellow Russians.
