The Harrier 'Jump Jet' is the only successful ground attack, close support and reconnaissance Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft. Originally designed and manufactured by Hawker Siddeley, the Harrier II development was a joint UK-US collaboration between British Aerospace BAe and McDonnell Douglas. The improved version features more powerful engines and systems, as well as design characteristics specific to UK and US variants. The UK and US variants are now maintained by BAE Systems and Boeing respectively. The aircraft often operates from naval ships because of its unique VTOL capability, as well as from ground stations.
