LAV - Línea Aeropostal Venezolana draws its history from the French company Aéropostale (known as Lignes Aériennes Latécoère until 1927) launched in 1929. After the withdrawal of the French state from its subsidies, operations shifted to Venezuelan hands. The company name changed to LAV - Línea Aeropostal Venezolana in 1935. At the start, the company was capitalized at 1,600,000 bolívares, but it wasn't until May 21, 1937, that the government of Venezuela secured full ownership of the airline. In the early 1960s, the Venezuelan government wanted to separate LAV's international and domestic routes, thus creating a new airline, VIASA, for international flights. The company name changed to Aeropostal Alas de Venezuela .
