Mitsubishi Army Type Ki 1 (Hanriot HD.14 licence-built) seen in Kaze tachinu / The Wind Rises.

The Hanriot HD.14 was a French military trainer, a great success with over 2,000 aircrafts built at a time orders were limited due to wartime surplus and downsizing of the armed forces (Aéronautique Militaire (actually French Air Force under the French Army rule) receiving 1,925. This two-seat tandem biplane was powered by one Le Rhône 9C (80 hp) rotary engine. First airframes were fitted with a strong landing gear with ski to avoid flipover accident. Later, a more conventional and narrow landing gear track was the standart on later variants. A handfull machines were of the S variant (Sanitaire, meaning for casualty evacuation) but more numerous order of the trainer came from Belgium (58 aircrafts), Poland (nearly 300 of which 245 licence-built H-28 -local name of the HD. 14/23-), Japan (145, licence-built by Mitsubishi as 己 1 (Ka-1)) and smaller batches for Bulgaria, Romania, Mexico, Spain, Soviet Union and Estonia.
Some of them ended their life on civil registries.
The Aéronautique Maritime (actually French Fleet Air Arm) had its own aircraft: 14 HD.14 E2 plus 30 HD.17 (floatplane with a more powerful engine -130 hp-). This floatplane derivative was too on strength with Portugal, Greece, Latvia and Estonia.
