Morane-Saulnier Vanneau subtypes.

During the Occupation (1943), the Morane-Saulnier design office conceived a single-engine, two-seater trainer called the M.S.470, of which the prototype made its maiden flight the 6 February 1945. Instead the inline engine, the derivative M.S.472 was fitted with a 425 kW (570 hp) Gnome-Rhône 14M-05 piston radial engine and took off for the first time next December. The French Air Force ordered it under the name Vanneau (lapwing in english). The 230 examples built were used in particular by training units. Several variations were subsequently produced, including the M.S.474 with a landing hook for the French Navy. Eventually, the French Air Force oredered a new variant -the M.S.475- with a Hispano-Suiza 12Y engine (this engine underrated sub-variant was close to the V-12 fitted to the Dewoitine D.520 and so D.520 and M.S.475 share similar cowling shapes).
The "Vanneau" remained in service with the French Air Force and Navy until the late 1960s.
Around 30 Armée de l'Air M.S.475s were used as support aircraft during fighting in Algeria (Independence War), fitted with machine guns in the wings and rocket launchers under the wings, but were quickly replaced by T-6s from 1957 onwards.
Five other designs were on the blue print and four reached the flight test line with no more success.

This page lists all films that feature one of the 506 Morane-Saulnier Vanneau and derivatives built.
