The Yakovlev Yak-36 was a Soviet technology demonstrator for a VTOL combat aircraft of the 1960s. After a first study mixing axial and vertical turbojet, the Design Bureau has work on an aircraft with rotating nozzles. Two turbojets were required and the first semester of 1963 saw the first tethered hover flight and initial problems (hot gas reingestion, problems with control systems, ...) being overcome one by one. On 24 March 1966, the first complete flight was made from vertical takeoff transition to horizontal flight deceleration to vertical flight and vertical landing. So next year, the type was display at the Moscow-Domodedovo air show during the 50th Anniversary of the October Revolution.
The work then quickly switched on the drawing of a model dedicated to serial building, the Yak-36M which led to the operational Yakovlev Yak-38. Despite its name the Yak-36M is closest to the Yak-38 and so they must be linked to together.

Only four prototypes of the Yakovlev Yak-36 have been built.
